Movie Review: Dr. Strange

by Joseph Carlson

This is the fourteenth Marvel movie and it a testament to the film company that they can still surprise the audience.  Although Dr. Strange is another origin movie, this time of the Sorcerer Supreme, and it follows some of the same formula as others, in this case Iron Man.  What really sets apart this movie from that movie and basically all of the Marvel movies so far is that Dr. Strange really uses his brain instead of brawn.

And indeed much of the movie shows Dr. Strange studying for something.  After getting in a car wreck and destroying his god-like surgeon ability the main character goes on a quest to find a way to restore his hands back to the way they were.  This leads him to find The Ancient One, someone who tells him that there is much more going on in the world and that he can help.

So, he studies, and studies some more.  It may sound weird, but I actually liked this part of the movie.  Many of the Marvel heroes in the end decide that punching something is the way to solve all of your problems but even from the early fights in the movie Dr. Strange uses his wits and brains to outwit his opponent.

The villain, like in most Marvel movies is one an done, an ancient entity that holds planets in a time bubble where time is irrelevant.  Why?  Because.  The climax at the end and with many of the fight scenes is truly jaw-dropping but what makes the end stand out more to me then any other Marvel ending is that instead of punches thrown at each other, a deal is struck and well that is something truly unique.

If you want to see some truly amazing visuals and good yarn with and interesting climax, go see Dr. Strange.

Dr. Strange is now in theaters.
